The most depressing movies ever?

June 2024 · 9 minute read

I simply got finished giving Legends of the Fall a re-watch. It used to be mainly simply nearly hours of perpetual sorrow. I am now on heroin to manage.

On a extra serious be aware, what are a few of the most depressing movies you might have ever seen that were still well-produced, directed, and with astounding performances?

Side notice: Anthony Hopkins is the very embodiment of theatrical ability. It's no longer easy to believably pull off the function of any person whose had a stroke. Right right down to the lip curl his performance in LOTF was superb.

Come and See. A Russian film about World War II. I’d submit a link to the trailer however OP would then want extra drugs. It’s been known as the most accurate film depiction of war.

by Anonymousreply 2April 25, 2023 7:Thirteen AM

Maybe you should read this thread as an alternative, OP.

My subsequent drag persona

through Anonymousanswer 22April 25, 2023 11:34 AM

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas

by means of Anonymousanswer 25April 25, 2023 12:15 PM

They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

I could handiest watch it once. The finishing scene is traumatising. The ancient background in the back of the movie is intense, we all heard how bad the nice depression was, so to see it laid in any such manner where the particpants seemingly had no manner out and the audience loved seeing other people essentially kill themselves is unquestionably emblematic of this entire theme.

That being stated, the most terrifying scene to me is when a specific character must be carried via their partner. I would possibly not destroy it, but the tune, the cheering crowds, the cinematography + enhancing and the sheer physicality of the actors' performances are all the reason why I won't watch this movie once more.

When the Wind Blows. That movie made the similary-themed The Testament with Jane Alexander and DL-fav Lukas Haas look like an ABC Weekend Special.

House of Sand and Fog. Great acting, but very bleak movie.

by means of Anonymousanswer 29April 25, 2023 1:52 PM

via Anonymousreply 33April 25, 2023 2:19 PM

R26 Agreed. I saw it on TV when I was only a kid, and it really caught with me. I remember the cruelty and inhumanity of all of it.

via Anonymousreply 35April 25, 2023 2:21 PM

Sauvage depressed the hell out of me.

Shame.

Despite Michael Fassbender's pendulous, flopping cock, the film was incredibly unhappy and stark.

via Anonymousreply 40April 25, 2023 2:36 PM

Deer Hunter. I watched it once and can never watch it once more. It traumatized me. Every solid member was once at the most sensible in their game.

It's absurd to be scolded via datalounges self appointed hall displays for a developing a duplicate thread of one created two years in the past.

Children of Men is on my depressing checklist, would possibly not watch it once more.

by Anonymousreply 52April 25, 2023 10:36 PM

Brasil, intended to be an outrageous parody however our modern lives are too similar to the fable. Specifically the terrorist attacks and the ugly cosmetic surgery depicted, too depressing to watch

What Dreams May Come depressed me

R5 You embarrassed your self right here.

by means of Anonymousanswer 55April 26, 2023 12:33 AM

Yet every other Vote for House of Sand and Fog. As my pal recommended it to me: “man, that may be a MESSED up movie. You have to look it!” And yeah, it’s beautiful haunting. It sticks with you.

That’s my criteria for movies like this - that and so gorgeous/fascinating you would love to observe once more but it surely’s too brutal to even believe.

City of God

Requiem for a Dream. It is solely painful

Enter the Void

by way of Anonymousreply 56April 26, 2023 8:50 AM

Oh through Christ that documentary do not watch it

“Dear Zachary”

Bambi messed me up lovely good when I was a child. When I was very younger I began gazing the old Turner Classic Movies with my mother, it was once one thing we did together. We watched Imitation of Life with Lana Turner and the ending was heartbreaking.

by means of Anonymousanswer 60April 26, 2023 10:02 AM

R59 - I by no means saw the film, but when the play was revived on Broadway a variety of years ago (with Edie Falco), the guy in front of me used to be awash in tears right through the remaining 10 mins.

I felt like I was at a wake.

via Anonymousreply 61April 26, 2023 10:05 AM

[quote] Momma Mia. Was never the similar after looking at it.

I couldn’t get thru greater than a half hour. Maybe if I’d been inebriated I’d have managed. I realised I will be able to’t deal with musicals where everyone sings deliriously satisfied, upbeat songs. Im no longer certain I love what that says about me.

by way of Anonymousanswer 62April 26, 2023 3:48 PM

R60 yes, Bambi! I rewatched it the other year for the first time since I was 5 years old and it was just as tense. Beautifully animated and painted, however, guy, when it’s grim it’s GRIM.

Mileage varies, but those three are the most depressing motion pictures I’ve ever noticed (and I’ve noticed reasonably a couple of, including the often-listed _They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?_, which traumatized an excessively young me and became me into a Marxist for lifestyles):

1. Bergman’s _The VIrgin Spring_ (1960)

2. Aki Kaurismäki’s _The Match Factory Girl_ (1990)

3. Lars Von Trier’s _Dogville_ (2003)

The film Glory used to be the most effective film that made me depressed. Other movies have made me unhappy, but the tragic ending of Glory used to be a different stage.

The Opposite of Sex is through a ways the movie I have hated the most. I don’t mean hate as simply dislike. I actually wanted to bash in the head of the Christina Ricci persona. It used to be an intense hatred.

through Anonymousreply 74May 7, 2023 7:38 PM

Requiem for a Dream, with Ellen Burstyn.

Just fucking shoot me already.

Huge Diane Lane fan, I noticed this as a 10yr previous gayling & used to be completely devastated, I bawled inconsolably at the end. My dad walked out of the room, disgusted via my blubbering, & my mother walked in & asked me what used to be mistaken. I was crying so arduous I couldn’t speak. She requested me if my dad had hit me, & I still couldn’t answer. He got here again in the room to shield himself, & I in the end regained the power of speech & said it was the movie. I think my folks each said “Bah” & disregarded me, disgusted through my histrionics.
